Session 1- Introduction to Technology & World Change

Before this session, I had no idea what this module was about and was quite worried if I could catch up during the session. Things got better when Professor Gurinder Shahi gave us a brief introduction to the module, followed by a YouTube video, “Did You Know; Shift Happens - Globalization; Information Age”.

I enjoyed this video and was impressed by the different facts and claims. This video has set me thinking if some claims are really true. One example is whether China will really become the number one English-speaking country in the world soon. From what I know, Mandarin is the official language in China and I do not really hear citizens of China speaking English, so how will China become the number one English-speaking country in the world. This claim tells me that nothing is impossible and anything can happen in this world as the world is constantly changing.

During the second half of the session, he showed us an episode of the documentary, “Guns, Germs and Steel”. After the video, he posed a question to the class for discussion. The question was why the man, called Yali, in the video said that "Why you white man have so much cargo and we New Guineans have so little”. This question made me realise that different countries have different level of technologies and not all countries are enjoying the benefits brought about by the advance in technology.

One thing that captured my attention during the session was what Professor Gurinder Shahi said. He mentioned that technology is changing so rapidly that what we learn now may no longer be useful in a few years down the road. I agreed with what he said and think that this applies to everything we learn. As such, we should always keep up with the changes in technology and upgrade our skills to make full use of current technology.

Towards the end of the session, the class discussed about various technological breakthroughs and their implications. We also went through some technology revolutions and innovations in the past that were important to humans. The last question regarding the future of human race made me wonder what is going to happen in the future and what other technology innovations will bring us to greater heights.

I would rate 7 out of 10 for this session as it has allowed me to know more about Technology & World Change, set me thinking and impressed me with the different technological breakthroughs.
