Session 9 - Emerging and Future Technologies

Indeed, this session was quite interesting. This session taught me to think how things can possibly go. If we limit ourselves too much, we cannot go too far. We will have to break the barriers and go beyond. I like the quote by Albert Einstein. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” In my opinion, I think that both imagination and knowledge are important. With knowledge but no imagination, you cannot go far and you will be unable to see the future. With imagination but no knowledge, the things that you imagine may be totally impossible. Imagining something that will definitely not happen is pointless because we are unable to carry out. However, it is good to imagine because with imagination, you can make it happen. This will allow us to come across different possible interesting things.

One invention that I find it quite interesting is human robots. I find them rather amazing! Human robots can serve as a life companion for people and can also help people to perform task. I find one useful application of human robots will be to defend the country. Human robots can be used to defend countries that face a shortage of people to defend the country or competing with other areas such as research and development for people. Humans can focus on research and development while robots are defending the country. One downside is that human robots can result in overpopulation in certain countries as these robots compete for jobs with humans. This may cause social unrest and affect the development of the country.

Another invention that I wish it will come true is seeing all the information of objects we are interested in through a pair of spectacles. This will be so convenient for us! By then, we can just find out more about anything that we are interested in immediately when we look at it. This will allow us to make any decision on the spot without having to go back and look for information. Everything will
be happening at a faster pace with information being easily available.

Prof mentioned something like we should create a fair society when people enjoy being humans. I totally agree with what he said. We can invent things such as robots and machine to make lives easier and convenient for us, but this should not affect the lives of other humans such as causing them to lose their jobs and thus source of income. I find it rather meaningless if making the lives of some people better will make lives of other people worse. This will be unfair to the poor and less knowledgeable people as they are the ones that will normally be retrenched if robots are to replace humans to do the manual work. Hence, it is important to create a fair society when people enjoy being humans and are able to live in content.

The presentations for this session are all quite interesting. Some of the presentations include virtual reality, 3D printing and artificial intelligence. I find virtual reality quite shocking. When the presenter showed us a video of how people can be so wild over a virtual person, I was really shocked. I found it quite unbelievable. Everyone is cheering for the virtual person onstage. This shows that virtual reality is affecting people in our society nowadays and people may be too involved in it. This can be quite harmful because people are now affected by something that does not even exist. Some actions have to be taken to reduce virtual reality. In addition, another student presented on 3D printing and I find it quite interesting and cool. We are even able to print 3D artifact at home which is so convenient. However, I am quite puzzled of how do people set the dimension of how to print the 3D artifact and whether there is a limit to how big the 3D artifact must be.

The last presenter of the session talked about Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). One issue for concern regarding robots is intelligence surplus by robots. Even though robots may be following orders by humans currently, will robots be able to decide for themselves in the future? Humans may order robots to kill other humans but will the robots turn back and kill their owners? If that happens, robots are not as beneficial as many think. Robots may one day be smarter than humans and take over everything that humans have. This will really be disastrous! This is therefore something that humans should consider when they decide to create more robots. I think that humans should develop robots that we can control and are able to keep track of so that we will not be controlled by them instead.

I will rate this session 9 out of 10 because I find this session very interesting with all the videos, information and presentations.
